Mercury Face a Battle to Repeat

The 2007 WNBA Champs have a lot of work to do if they are to defend and/or repeat their Championship title. The team that beat Detroit last summer has quite a different look this season.

The Mercury has begun with a new coach and personnel changes. Last season’s championship coach Paul Westhead left after to the season to return to the NBA.

Former assistant coach Corey Gaines has taken over and and looks to be continuing the Mercury’s up-tempo “Paul-ball” that carried them to the title. They are still run-and-gun and 3-pointers even though they seemed a little rusty against Los Angeles on Saturday.

We have our top guards, Kelly Miller, Cappie Pondexter and Big-D (Dianna Taurasi) back this season even though they missed training camp due to over seas commitments. Penny Taylor will be missed but the newbies seem to be filling her shoes ok. And Tangela Smith should be happy with the help in the pain acquired during the free agency period.

Some of our new faces include Barbara Farris, an 8 year WNBA veteran post player, who will help put some muscle in the paint.
